Your guide to choosing the best Hiking Pack, Wheeled Bakcpack, or Duffle bag
Are you looking to buy a hiking pack but aren’t sure where to start? Do you want wheels? Here is some information on the top brands Like High Sierra, Caribee and Black Wolf and what they offer.
The first thing you need to consider is do you really want to carry your luggage on your back? Do you need to? If the answer is yes you should look at the Black Wolf Cancun range or the Caribee Akula. The Black Wolf range is a lower price point (more money for travels) but is a very sturdy pack for the price!
If wheels are more your thing but you like the flexibility of a backpack then the choices are almost endless. Wheeled backpacks (wheeled hiking packs) and wheeled duffle bags (duffle bags with wheels) are a popular choice amongst young and experienced alike. These hybrids make it effortless to take on stairs, train stations, hostels, airports or muddy festivals!! Caribee Fast Track and Caribee Skymaster ranges offer the size and comfort to make using it as a backpack easy and comfortable. Zip off daypacks and multi compartments make the Caribee ranges standout as quality products.
High Sierra offer the AT2505 and AT2506 which are trolley bags that also have backpack straps and zip off daypacks which attach to the front of the packs. The daypacks also have smart sleeves on the back which allow you to slip them over the trolley handles for a quick and easy transit.
The AT2505 when used without the daypack means you can take it on-board as carry-on luggage on international and some domestic flights. Total dimensions (L+W+D) are less than 115cm making it the perfect travel companion for the light packer (and time saver). The HighSierra 2501 is a duffle bag that has backpack straps hidden away on the underside, allowing an extra level of flexibility to an already fantastic bag.
Black Wolf have mastered the duffle on wheels. They offer a many ranges of drop bottom (split bottom) duffles in heaps of sizes and colours. Black Wolf also incorporates an expandable gusset in their duffles which allows you to add 10-20 litres of capacity in seconds! The Ridge Runner and Blade Runner styles start at 40+10Litres , 60+10, 80+20, and go up to the huge 110+20L monster which stores all your gear easily.
Drop bottom bags are great as they allow you to separate your packing into two sections (top and bottom). The bags open up like a book, and usually have a divider between the top and bottom halves to keep packing separate. This can also be opened up to allow for one large compartment if you have bulkier things like ski gear, equipment etc. The top section is also accessible from the top of the bag like a traditional duffle. This means that you no longer have to dig through your clothes to get to items on the bottom. Everything is accessible easily and quickly.
High Sierra offer light-weight duffle bags with drop bottom feature. The High Sierra Elevate (EL102, EL103) range is one of the lightest on the market and comes in 3 great colours. (Orange, Green, Black). The largest is 110 litres and 4kg, while the smaller one is 80 litres and 3.2kg.
The High Sierra AT bags offer the drop bottom functionality while acting like a suitcase. The one thing to remember when buying a duffle bag on wheels is that it is designed to lie on the floor. This AT rage of High Sierra stands upright like a suitcase (regardless of how it is packed).
Backpack, wheeled backpack, or wheeled duffle, we have all the option in one place at BAGS TO GO.
